[November 5, 2025] — Newlight, a portfolio company of lomarlabs, the venture lab of one of our maritime subsidiaries, Lomar Shipping, successfully completed Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) for its hydrogen retrofit package for two- and four-stroke main engines enabling greater fuel efficiency and lower emissions.
In collaboration with lomarlabs, Lomar, and AURELIA, a naval architecture and marine engineering company, and validated by RINA according to Class Rules for hydrogen-fueled ships, Newlight’s system is now ready for retrofit on a commercial vessel, with all interfaces optimized and approved to class standards.
The hydrogen retrofit system allows existing diesel engines to operate on a hydrogen–fuel blend, reducing carbon emissions and improving efficiency without requiring engine replacement. Following a successful four-day FAT program demonstrating that the technology can be safely operated, Newlight now proceeds to Harbor Acceptance Testing during vessel commissioning, a final step before sea trials.
As the maritime industry advances toward decarbonization and shipowners seek ways to reduce emissions across existing fleets, Newlight’s technology provides a practical solution to adopt hydrogen-blend operation on existing in-service engines.
