The HOME Project

Dedicated shelters and support for refugees

The HOME Project was set up in response to the global refugee crisis, the largest the world has seen since the Second World War. Greece alone has received over one million people in search of shelter and safety from the beginning of 2015; 8,000 lives have been lost trying to cross the Mediterranean. The HOME Project aims to provide security, dignity and decent living conditions for the most vulnerable - to Help, Overcome, Motivate, Empower. In the midst of humanitarian disaster, it seeks to move people from despair to hope, and from fear to safety.

Over half of the refugees are children and they are the silent heart of this tragedy. Ripped from their homelands through violence and war, they are without the basic needs which most people take for granted. Many of them are alone, forced to fend for themselves and at risk. We are active in setting up homes and accompanying these stranded children from the refugee camps, police stations and detention centres to the security of protected shelters where they will receive care and attention.

Everyone has the right to a standard of living adequate for the health and wellbeing of himself and of his family, including food, clothing, housing and medical care." — Art 25, UN Declaration of Human Rights

We are also helping to address the mental health and wellbeing needs of refugees to bring healing and social integration. Our teams are active on the ground in camps and at refugee spots in order to provide support, protection and empowerment which includes skills awareness for education and employment.

Many of the adult refugees are skilled labourers and professionals who have left behind active careers. Just because they have lost their homeland, they should not lose their livelihood. We work with each person holistically, recognizing their dignity through meeting needs and addressing trauma, including physical and mental wellbeing, education, and employment. Through networks, partnerships, resources and the patient provision of dedicated care, we seek ultimately to empower people to integrate into society and give them hope for tomorrow.
