George M. Logothetis
Chairman and CEO
George Logothetis is Chairman and CEO of the Libra Group, an international business with assets and operations across more than 54 countries spanning six continents. The group is predominately focused on six sectors, including aviation, energy, hospitality, real estate, shipping and diversified investments. Libra Group is a family owned business that encourages diversity and advocates capitalism with a conscience, exemplified by its commitment to a wide range of social responsibility programs.
George joined his family’s shipping company in 1993, becoming CEO in 1994 at the age of 19. In the ensuing years he presided over the company’s transformation from three vessels into a fleet of 55 before creating the Libra Group in 2003.
In recent years the Libra Group has invested at scale in the transportation sector. Before the recent revival in the shipping market, Libra’s shipping company acquired over 125 vessels, including a $1-billion newbuilding investment program covering 43 containerships and bulk carriers. Libra’s aviation leasing business has completed in excess of US$8 billion of transactions in the fixed-wing and helicopter markets since its inception in 2004. The company has undertaken multiple aircraft investment cycles including a $1 billion fleet divestment in 2007, and $4.8 billion of fleet investment and divestment cycles running from 2008 to 2020. In 2022, among other acquisitions, it announced the acquisition of up to 125 eVTOL aircraft from BETA Technologies.
Libra’s residential and commercial real estate interests are global and include ownership of more than 5.8 million square feet, while its hospitality interests comprise almost 60 hotels owned and managed globally. Its energy subsidiaries will soon reach the one-gigawatts mark in the development of renewable energy projects, including solar, wind, and waste-to-energy. This includes more than 220 projects owned, currently under development, or previously developed in six countries. The Group also has experience in biogas production, clean power generation and low emission fuels derived from industrial and agricultural by-products.
Important among Libra’s business values is a sense of community and the group expresses its responsibility through dedicated programs and initiatives which seek to deliver educational opportunity, business opportunity, and acts of humanity towards people who are neglected, marginalized, or under-served. These programs span internships, educational fellowships, backing for entrepreneurs, aid for refugees, and support for charitable institutions and other non-profit organizations.
George and his wife, Nitzia, founded the Seleni Institute, a New York-based non-profit organization that addresses maternal mental health with the simple insight “Change a mother’s life, change a child’s life.” The institute was set up in order to destigmatize and transform mental health and wellness by addressing real-life issues that challenge the emotional health of women, men, and their families, including: pregnancy, infertility, miscarriage, stillbirth, menopause, parenting and child loss.
George is also Chairman of the Leadership Council of Concordia, a non-profit organization which seeks to promote public-private partnerships, and he is a member of the Board of Directors of President Barack Obama’s My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Alliance.
